Keystone Science School made great strides in 2019 to invest in our future with the completion of our Capital Campaign, A Place to Inspire. Thanks to the incredible support of our partners, donors, and community, a total of 179 gifts raised $3.95M towards the project exceeding our original fundraising goal of $3.9M. We are grateful to be a part of this generous community.
Over the years our campus has changed and improved to help us carry out our mission to inspire curiosity and critical thinking through the lens of science. With the addition of Bighorn and Henry Dorms in the 1980s to our transition to an independent non-profit in 2013, we’ve maintained our focus on what matters most: our students and educators. A Place to Inspire was the fifth capital campaign completed by Keystone Science School (KSS) since 1988. With the intention to continue growing our impact and realize our mission, we have created A Place to Inspire with the addition of Tieken Place, our new administrative and classroom building, and Alpine, our new instructor cabin.
TIEKEN PLACE: A PLACE FOR COLLABORATION
Located at the front of campus, Tieken Place serves as the center of activity. This building provides a welcoming entrance to visitors and participants while providing additional parking capacity. The program staff can now work alongside marketing and development staff, helping each team to think more broadly about the work they do. With an open office design, Tieken Place remains flexible for future growth and office configurations. When additional space is needed, the option to expand the building easily exists.
The addition of indoor teaching spaces in Tieken Place increases connectivity throughout our organization. The administrative staff is one step closer to Science. Adventure. and FUN! by looking out the windows seeing students arriving and departing campus or actively learning in the classrooms.
ALPINE CABIN: IMPROVED INSTRUCTOR HOUSING
Providing sufficient living quarters for our team of instructors is a critical component to impacting the 8,800 youth and adults served by KSS each year. Housing shortages paired with the high cost of living in Summit County make it challenging to attract and retain high-quality staff. With the addition of Alpine Cabin and the relocation of offices out of Marmot and Porcupine buildings, KSS has opened eight additional bedrooms. The new 1,002sf cabin is a critical investment towards providing adequate and comfortable living spaces to support our staff.
Alpine Cabin is consistent with the look and feel of our historic campus but with the modern amenities like running water and a kitchenette. Alpine is the first of four small cabins planned for the Instructor Village on campus. The Village design allows for efficient and strategic expansion as funding is available in the future.
