staff retreat kss 2019

“KSS is my home away from home! The best part is that I can share my love of science and nature with kids and give them an amazing camp experience. I don't think I could find another job as personally fulfilling as this one, and I couldn't ask for a better location, or a better group of people to spend my summer with.”

– Emma Tunks, Instructor

“Sharing my passion and knowledge of diverse environments with young students and adults alike gives me hope that they may find inspiration in mother-nature and begin to ask and answer critical questions that will aid in the preservation of our outdoor world.”

– Rachel Ackerman, Instructor

Our Campus & Staff Housing

Keystone Science School’s historic 23-acre campus is built on the site of the Old Keystone Village, a former railroad and sawmill site which supported silver and gold mining. Our facilities include modern log-style dormitories, a central dining hall, an outdoor amphitheater, and a state-of-the-art observatory. Thanks to the amazing support of our Capital Campaign donors, in 2019 we created A Place to Inspire with the addition of Tieken Place, our new administrative and classroom building, and Alpine, our new Instructor cabin.

Staff housing at KSS is simple and rustic, as most cabins were built between 1880 and 1960. Each unit has electricity and heat (either gas or electric space heaters), however many buildings do not have running water. Staff share a community kitchen, common areas, and single occupancy bathroom facilities. Depending on the season, staff may be offered a private room or may be required to live with roommates. Please contact the Human Resources department for more information about staff housing!

Summit County, Colorado

While our staff come from a wide variety of backgrounds, our team is united with a passion for outdoor recreation. Fortunately for us, Summit County is nature’s playground, offering no shortage of skiing/riding, hiking, backpacking, cycling, and other outdoor recreation opportunities. Because of this, Summit County attracts tourists, seasonal employees, and a vibrant permanent resident population of 30,000 people. Though housing is limited and often quite expensive, KSS is proud to offer affordable or no cost housing to most seasonal employees. We recommend the following resources to learn more about the Summit County community and to find housing in the area:

Work-Based Learning & Internships

KSS develops the next generation of leaders through work-based learning opportunities for young professionals. We offer a 10-month Instructor Apprentice program for entry-level outdoor educators, seasonal Internships for current college students, and flexible part-time jobs for high-schoolers. Many of our past employees have used a summer job at KSS to fulfill their school’s internship or service learning requirements, and we’re happy to work with students to meet their individual learning objectives.
