Science. Adventure. CHALLENGE!

Summer Contest

Here are fun at-home activities to get you outside to play and think creatively. New challenges are posted each week and coincide with current Day Camp activities. Pick any or all of the challenges below, take a picture of yourself completing the challenge, and share it with KSS and #ScienceAdventureCHALLENGE on Facebook or Instagram.

Every completed and shared challenge between June 8th and September 30th will give you an entry to win this telescope that we have used on programming. We are only able to ship in the lower 48 states of the US.

Challenge 9: Make a Naturalist Observation

Take a step into becoming an expert observer of our natural world by making a naturalist observation. Find a place in nature that you can stop and sit for a bit. Pick one object or one area to focus on.

What do you notice using your senses (seeing, smelling, feeling, hearing)? What do you wonder about your object or area? What does the area or object remind you of? Once you’ve asked yourself these questions, sketch and label what you observed so that you can share your findings with other nature observers. Now you're well on your way to becoming an expert naturalist!

Materials Needed:
  • Paper
  • Watercolors, crayons, or colored pencils
  • Clipboard
Ways to Participate

1. Upload a photo of you and your completed challenge to Instagram or Facebook, mention @KeystoneScienceSchool and tag #ScienceAdventureCHALLENGE
2. Email your name and photo to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
3. Upload a photo via the form at the bottom of this page.

Pro-Tip

Tune into your senses other than sight by closing your eyes to listen, smell, and feel.

Challenge 8: Make Your Own Mining Tool

Many advancements in our community came from mining and developing mining technology. For this challenge, we want you to think like an engineer! You will design and prototype a mining tool that lets you mine MORE rocks and minerals or mine rocks and minerals FASTER!

The tool could help you easily sift through raw materials, dig more efficiently, or see the different materials more clearly. Think about how you would dig into the dirt and separate the natural materials you find. Next, draw a design of a tool you think would help in that effort. Don’t forget a creative name for your tool! Once your design drawing is complete, create a prototype of your tool with craft materials, and test it. After testing your tool, ask yourself what could work better and make an improvement based on your test. Now you’re thinking like an engineer!

Materials Needed:
  • Craft materials (cardboard, construction paper, tape, pipe cleaners, rubber bands, etc.)
  • Natural material like dirt, sand, and rocks
Ways to Participate

1. Upload a photo of you and your completed challenge to Instagram or Facebook, mention @KeystoneScienceSchool and tag #ScienceAdventureCHALLENGE
2. Email your name and photo to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
3. Upload a photo via the form at the bottom of this page.

Pro-Tip

The key is to think of an idea, draw it out, and then improve it through testing. As long as you follow those steps, you’re sure to come up with something amazing!

Challenge 7: Make Oreo Cookie Moon Phases

Did you know the moon moves away from the Earth about 2.8 cm every year, the gravity on the moon is 1/6th the gravity of the Earth, and that 12 humans have walked on the moon!? But why does the moon always seem to look different when we look at it in the sky? Let’s have some milk and cookies and figure that out together.

Slowly twist an Oreo to maximize the amount of frosting on one side when you separate the halves. Use the popsicle stick to create the phases of the moon out of the frosting. Arrange the phases of the moon in order.

Materials Needed:
  • 8 Oreo Cookies
  • A popsicle stick or other tool for scraping the frosting
Ways to Participate

1. Upload a photo of you and your completed challenge to Instagram or Facebook, mention @KeystoneScienceSchool and tag #ScienceAdventureCHALLENGE
2. Email your name and photo to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
3. Upload a photo via the form at the bottom of this page.

Pro-Tip

If the cookie breaks or you scrape off too much frosting, you should probably eat the cookie...and then try again.

Challenge 6: Build a 'Natty Boat'

Have you ever tried to think like a scientist or engineer? These professionals use a special kind of thinking that helps them creatively solve problems called the Design Thinking Process. They will ask questions like: What do I need to know about this problem to solve it? What ideas do I have? How could I build this?

Let’s use the Design Thinking Process to design boats that float using only found natural materials! Think like a scientist or engineer and ask yourself these questions: What kind of boat would I want to build? What natural materials will I consider when making my boat? Once you think through those questions, go build your Natty Boat!

Materials Needed:
  • Any natural materials found on the ground. Don’t pick anything off living plants.
  • A body of water like a pond, lake, stream, or bathtub.
Ways to Participate

1. Upload a photo of you and your completed boat to Instagram or Facebook, mention @KeystoneScienceSchool and tag #ScienceAdventureCHALLENGE
2. Email your name and photo to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
3. Upload a photo via the form at the bottom of this page.

Pro-Tip

Grass can be a good rope to tie other materials together.

Challenge 5: Mini Marshmallow Structure

Let’s get STEM-y! The “E” in STEM stands for engineering. While there are multiple kinds of engineering careers, we want you to practice being a civil engineer. Civil engineers design and build structures such as houses, bridges, roads, and so much more! For this challenge, you are going to build your own original structure out of only mini marshmallows and toothpicks! Bonus points for replicating a famous structure or being weight-bearing. Can your structure hold something heavy without collapsing?

Materials Needed:
  • Mini Marshmallows
  • Toothpicks
  • Your Imagination
Ways to Participate

1. Upload a photo of you and your completed structure to Instagram or Facebook, mention @KeystoneScienceSchool and tag #ScienceAdventureCHALLENGE
2. Email your name and photo to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
3. Upload a photo via the form at the bottom of this page.

Pro-Tip

Use a level surface to ensure the stability of your structure. Adding multiple marshmallows at toothpick intersections makes it even more sturdy.

Challenge 3: Enter the Camp Legend Art Contest

The Summer of Courage is coming up fast! It’s that time of year we dig out our camp t-shirts from the bottom of our drawers and get excited about spending our days outdoors. We’ve already had a couple of sightings of KSS Camp Legends, and they are as excited as we are about the Summer of Courage!

For your next challenge, we want you to create your own original art piece of the KSS Camp Legends. Maybe you’ll draw an epic battle scene of the Gold Bandits competing against the Green Zombies in CLAW. Maybe you’ll sculpt a Hot Pink Gorilla in its natural habitat. Maybe you’ll create a dance routine depicting Captain Zero’s final triumphant defeat of Dr. Food Waste. Your art piece can include a single Camp Legend or many Camp Legends.

Your art piece could be a drawing, painting, sculpture, diorama, song, poetry, or dance. These are just some suggestions, we want you to be as creative as possible!

Ways to Participate

• Upload your art to Instagram or Facebook, mention @KeystoneScienceSchool and tag #ScienceAdventureCHALLENGE
