Sipping for Science - September 25-27, 2020
Sipping for Science is going virtual as an online wine auction from September 25-27th, 2020!
Keystone Science School has had to shift our thinking around everything we do from our traditional programming to our annual events in 2020. This year, Sipping for Science was planned to be held at the Keystone Ranch Restaurant in June. Due to the constraints of COVID-19, we had to cancel the original event.
Our generous Event Sponsors, Robbie’s Tavern, The Canteen, and Spire Collection donated over $7,000 in premium wines so that we can host Sipping for Science as an online wine auction!
The event’s proceeds will be split equally between our Scholarship Fund and our Resiliency and Restart Fund. Thanks to our Sipping for Science Sponsors, Breckenridge Grand Vacations and Climax Molybdenum Company the event has already raised $13,000. Our goal is to raise and additional $7,000 through the event’s auction purchases and additional donations to KSS. Thank you for joining us in support of our mission to inspire curiosity and critical thinking during this most unusual time.
Resiliency & Restart Fund
The onset of the pandemic in mid-March resulted in closing our campus and rescheduling/canceling programs. The pandemic continues to cause KSS immense financial disturbances and challenges.
We launched our Resiliency and Restart Fund in late-March with a small group of our donors to support our resilience during this crisis and our ability to restart our efforts in the phases that the pandemic will allow.
Since then the fund has expanded to encompass all General Fund gifts in 2020 given that these funds support our daily operations and our ability to nimbly respond to the evolving issues of the pandemic. The Resiliency and Restart Fund is part of an overall strategic effort to ensure the long-term viability of KSS.
The support of the Resiliency and Restart Fund made it possible for KSS to retain staff who re-envisioned our summer programming in just three weeks. During the 2020 Summer of Courage KSS served 318 youth through camp programs. This includes 141 individual campers who attended Summer CATCH Camp across five local elementary schools.
This summer, the financial hardship of COVID-19 on our Summer CATCH Camp families was especially prevalent. Some parents had been out of work for months. Other parents were just beginning to return to work. We knew that families would need additional financial support. Over $150,000 fundraised dollars supported 73 campers whose families qualified for our Free and Reduced Lunch and 40 scholarships given on top of the program’s sliding fee scale rate for families with expressed and immense financial hardships.
We expect that families will need ongoing, in-person academic and educational care throughout the school year. Our Scholarship Fund aids us in continuing to offer these options to working families and our local Summit School District scholars. As students return to school this fall with partial in-person learning and online studies, KSS is dedicated to supporting all families in returning to or retaining work and in their need for supportive academic and educational care.
We know families will need ongoing support to attend our programs this school year. As a result, we are offering a built-in sliding-fee scale for our programs. Knowing that the extent of the financial hardship families face is immense and widespread across our community we are also offering a formal and brief Scholarship Application on top of our sliding-fee scale to support families experiencing unexpected and extreme financial hardships.
